What is SaaS SEO?

SaaS SEO is the technique of SEO for SaaS websites to optimize it to rank and bring traffic for desired keywords. SaaS SEO helps the SaaS business get customers organically from search engines like Google, Bing, ChatGPT(Yeah, it’s worth mentioning this tool even it is not a search engine else it will steal my content and don’t give me credit for my content) etc. Did you mark the first sentence of this paragraph? It’s optimized for generating FEATURED SNIPPET. You will get to know about how top optimize your content for featuered snippets later on this blog. Now here I will throw another stupid question for the sake of SEO with an H3 tag (hierarchical order of heading tags are important)! Wait a minute! Let’s don’t say only “SEO” let me write it as “SaaS SEO”. Repeatation of the important keyword is very important for SaaS SEO! Note it down.

Why SEO is important for SaaS companies?

SEO is important for SaaS companies because it helps them get important keywords ranking, online visibility and traffic organically from search engines like Google and Bing. SaaS SEO is a very crucial part of marketing for SaaS companies and you can’t put this out of the list of marketing.

Did you notice how I answered the above question? That’s a ninza technique to optimize for featured snippets or PEOPLE ALSO ASK results. Here the trick is: I have added an image below which has the title, file name and alt text as: Image of PEOPLE ALSO ASK snippet for search query “saas seo” on Google. This is one of the image optimization techniques for SaaS SEO. Add keyword in file name, title and alt text.

{Image of PEOPLE ALSO ASK snippet for search query “saas seo” on Google}

Here I will throw another question that is a Yes/No question type for PEOPLE ALSO ASK optimization for the keyword “SaaS SEO”

Is SEO important for B2B SaaS Companies?

Yes, SEO is important for B2b SaaS companies because it helps them get enormous traffic organically from search engines like Google which will help in generating revenue free of cost.

B2B SaaS SEO is highly important because it gives them good organic visibility which eventually helps in branding as many people will notice your brand name online. Branding is super important today for SaaS companies to stand out from the crowd because there is too much competiton in SaaS market and you can beat your competitors when your branding is strong. It doesn’t matter how powerful you are if you are not showing your power.

How to create SEO strategy for SaaS Business?

To create an SEO Strategy for SaaS Business you need to take the help of an SaaS SEO Consultant having prior experience with SEO for SaaS products who can strategize a roadmap and prepare action items to be done to start the SEO process for SaaS website. These listicles content are actually very useful and you should make listicles for those questions or headings where the question is “How to” related. There is a schema called How To Schema Markup which you can bring on to use in these “How to” related content. When you are doing SEO for SaaS website and get opportunity to find some topics related to “How to” then never delay making such content with perfect optimization. You don’t need to explain the steps with bullet points you can use the headings instead. Just make sure you add the “How to Schema” properly with all elements.

Is SEO for SaaS Costly?

Yes, SEO for SaaS is costly because it requires a lot of man hours along with cost of SEO Tools for SaaS Websites, Backlinks Acquisition, Web Development and most importantly Content Writing.

How to and where to find a SaaS SEO Consultant?

You can find a SaaS SEO Consultant from chinmaymahanta.com who has prior experience working with SaaS websites and help your business grow organically with SEO for your SaaS website.

SaaS SEO Checklist

This SaaS SEO Checklist contains all important SEO checkpoints and strategies you need to implement on your SaaS website to promote your SaaS product organically. If you are SaaS business founder or key business person in a SaaS business and looking for a SaaS SEO Consultant for SEO service of your website then consider hiring Chinmay Mahanta for it rather than implementing DIY SaaS SEO Kit. If you are an SEO or digital marketer who want to learn SEO for SaaS websites then download the SaaS SEO Checklist. You can understand my all the points mentioned in the SaaS SEO Checklist by reading all the points below.

Let’s start!

Important Technical SEO Checklist for SaaS Websites

XML Sitemap

XML Sitemap is a map of your website for Search Engine Crawlers to find important URLs on your website. Make sure to add all those URLs to XML Sitemap file which you want to index. And, you can avoid or you should avoid adding those URLs which you don’t want to be indexed. Adding unnecessary URLs to Sitemap will just waste the time of search engine crawlers and may not crawl sufficient number of URLs that are important because of the crawl budget limit.

If you are using WordPress, then the XML Sitemap is automatically managed by the WordPress SEO Plugins that you are using. Some of the common and popular WordPress SEO Plugins are Rank Math SEO, Yoast SEO and All in One SEO.

How to Find XML Sitemap on a SaaS website?

An XML Sitemap is located in the root directory of your domain and you can quickly look at the sitemap by adding “sitemap.xml” after your home page URL. For example, https://mysaaswebsite.com/ is the home page URL then make it https://mysaaswebsite.com/sitemap.xml

Robots.txt file for SaaS Website

A SaaS website can be complex in structure and may have several files/resources. There are certain sections of the website which don’t need to be crawled by search engines crawlers and you can instruct crawlers to avoid crawling such URLs through Robots.txt file.

Robots.txt file provides instructions to search engine crawlers to allow and disallow crawling of URLs.

Where to find the Robots.txt file in a SaaS Website?

You can find the robots.txt file in the same way how we did for XML Sitemap.

SSL Certificate

You can’t ignore SSL Certificate at all and all of your URLs should have SSL enabled. SSL adds a security layer to the communication channel to prevent data breach. Make sure all of your URLs run with https:// and not with http://

Does SSL Certificate improves ranking?

URLs with HTTPS have better rankings than with HTTP. It works like a tie breaker when comes to the comparison of two similar weightage URLs. SaaS websites must have SSL certificates because people will do the transaction for buying your proudcts. An SaaS SEO Consultant must pay attention to this and make sure all URLs have HTTPS.

Inspection of Canonical Issues of URLs

A page may have multiple URL variations of HTTP and HTTPS,WWW and non-WWW, slash at the end of the URL or without. These different variations of URLs can cause canonical issues on the website. An URL must always be unique because Google consider all variations of an URL as different.

How to inspect Canonical Issues of URLs?

Open the URL by removing “s” from the HTTPS in URL and if the page is opening with the non-HTTPS URL then there is a canonical issue. Same with WWW vs non-WWW and TRAILING SLASH.

Canonical Tags

In the above point, I explained about canonical issues of URLs which can happen because of some anomalies in web development work. A page’s content can also be found through different URLs like Categories or Tags if you have assigned to blogs. This can cause potential dupplicate issues of content found through multiple URLs. To prevent this content duplicity issue, canonical tags are used. Canonical tags contain the Canonical URL which is the original URL of the content. By implementing Canonical tags you prevent content duplicity issue and to some extent you solve the canonical issues of URLs I have mentioned in the above point but it is not guaranteed that canonical tags can solve that issue because Google don’t consider canonical tags as directives but just as hint. So, it is not necessary that Google will obey your canonical tags and index the right URL. It happens many times that Google indexes wrong URL because it thinks that is the right URL to be indexed.

Where to find Canonical tags?

To find canonical tags, check the source code of a page and find rel=”canonical”

Broken Links

Broken links are those URLs which are not accessible for some reasons and possible that the URL do not exist anymore (404 Status) or inaccessible because of server issue (5xx Status). Broken links are bad from user experience point of view. Broken links can affect SEO because if you have linked to a wrong URL instead of linking to any important page then crawlers won’t be able to find that page and link juice won’t pass to it.

Are Broken Links too bad for SEO?

Broken links are not so serious issue that if Google notices any broken links on your website then rankings will fall down. But it is always a best SEO practice for a SaaS SEO Consultant to put this in the SaaS SEO Checklist so that it can be avoided.

Custom 404 Page

Custom 404 Page is a page that is loaded when HTTP response code is 404. The reason behind having a custom 404 page is to create a good user experience for people who clicked on a broken link or mistyped the URL and landed somewhere which do not exist. To avoid putting users in a dead end, a custom 404 is developed to load when the HTTP response code is 404. The Custom 404 page helps users navigate to any other page on the website.

What if a SaaS SEO Consultant don’t add custom 404 page to the SaaS SEO checklist?

Well, a SaaS SEO Consultant must have this item on the SaaS SEO Checklist because it is the most common thing which everyone does in their website with some good creativity on their 404 pages. And, having a custom 404 page creates a really good user experience. If you have ever visited a 404 page then you know it.

Hreflang Tag (Only for multilingual sites)

Hreflan tags are highly important for websites which have content in multiple languages. For suppose you have a page which is written in English, and also you have that page same page’s content in Spanish, and French. In this case you have the same content in three different languages. In this scenario, a SaaS SEO Consultant must check for the use of hreflang tags on such pages.

How to find hreflang tags on a page?

Go the source code and find hreflang=

Page Speed

Page Speed is very important for SaaS SEO and must have in the SaaS SEO checklist. SaaS SEO Consultant and Web Developers must take page speed very seriously because it is not just the matter of user experience factor but a google ranking factor as well. If your website is loading too late then you need optimize it for good score. Make the web pages load within 3 seconds. Check you page speed in Google’s PageSpeed Insights. You can also check your page speed in other websites like GTMetrix, Pingdom, and Speed Vitals.

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are metrics related to page loading and user experience on the website. Three Core Web Vitals that contributes to ranking factors are LCP, FID and CLS. LCP stands for Largest Contentful Paint, FID stands for First Input Delay and CLS stands for Cumulative Layout Shift. A SaaS SEO Consultant can discuss about Core Web Vitals with the Web Developer to get these things fixed. You can check the Core Web Vitals in Google’s PageSpeed Insights.

Mobile Friendly

Website must be mobile friendly and there is no excuse on this because Google is mobile-first Search Engine and if the user experience is bad in mobile version of the website then it is going to be a serious issue for Google rankings. A SaaS SEO Consultant can check the web pages’ mobile friendliness from Google’s Mobile Friendly Test.

Google Search Console Setup

Google Search Console is not a ranking factor but it deserves to be in the list of SaaS SEO Checklist. Google Search Console is a tool provide by Google to webmasters to monitor their website’s performance in Google and how Google is treating the website’s pages for crawling and indexing. GSC is no less than a Gold Mine for a SaaS SEO Consultant because it helps in many ways including keywords research. You need to verify your website in Google Search Console and then submit your website’s XML Sitemap to it. It will fetch all URLs of the website and provide their indexing status as well as performance on Google.

Bing Webmaster Tool Setup

Why Bing Webmaster Tool is an important SEO tool for SaaS websites is because it provides some really good insights which Google Search Console do not provides. Plus it gives you insights on the performance of your website in Bing and there is still a little share of Bing available in the market and who know it may rise further as now they have added ChatGPT to Bing Search. Bonus Point: When setting up BWT, don’t forget to set up the MS Clarity. MS Clarity is an awesome free user experience monitoring tools for the SaaS websites and much helpful for SaaS SEO Consultants to know the users’ behavior on the website through heatmaps and session recordings.

Other Good To Have SEO cum UX Checklist for SaaS websites

In this category, all these SaaS SEO points are good to have which can create a good user-experience and in many ways it is related to SEO. What’s not related to SEO? Almost everything. One of my SaaS SEO clients is so mad about SEO is that he asks me everything before doing any changes on the website. Because he understands the power of SEO!

Social Media Integration

You will find social media integrations in almost all the websites and if you are running SaaS business then you should have Social Media profiles for you SaaS business to promote about your business.

Social Media Integration by Zoho, a SaaS website/company
Is it important to have Social Media Integration for SEO purpose?

It is not necessary. It is not mandatory. Neither it is going to give much SEO benefits nor it will give you more money. The purpose of it is to help users to find your social presence and also it helps Google to understand about your social presence. You should not ignore about the Social Factor that Google considers to understand the authority of the website. As I say always, in SEO everything is interlinked. Internet is the interconnection of networks and Google understand these networks to understand the relevancy, authority, and trustworthiness of a website/business.

Favicon

Favicon is that small icon of the website which you see on your browser’s tab. You can create a favicon on any design tools or there are also some online Favicon generators – favicon.io, favicon.cc

How Favicon is the part of SEO?

Favicon is more important from UX point of view than SEO because the purpose of Favicon is branding of your website. It displays your logo on browsers tab and help a user to find the tab where your website is opened. Most importantly, Google has started showing Favicons in Google Search Results. So, it is highly important that you take care of Favicon seriously.

Open Graph Meta Tags

Open Graph Meta tags or in short OG tags are those tags which are responsible for showing Title and Description with an Image for the page URL when it is shared in Social Media and Messaging platforms. It is not directly linked to SEO but once again it is an UX factor. Open Graph was introduced by Facebook. Now this has become the part of implementation for all websites because it produces more information about a page URL when shared on Social or Messaging platforms. A person can understand what that page is about without clicking on the link.

In the image below you can see how OG tags are implemented on the website code. There are different OG tags like Type, Title, Description, URL, Site Name and Image.

How Open Graph Tags look like

NAP (Name, Address, Phone No.)

Is it necessary to add Business Name, Address and Phone No. on the website? Not at all. But if you are running any legal business then what’s wrong in displaying your Business name, address of your office and office phone number. It is not required for all websites. In case of Local SEO it is highly important to keep the NAP consistent. How it comes under SaaS SEO checklist. It shows credibility of your business and gives a good user-experience to visitors and they will get to know that you are a legal business and exists somewhere on the earth. Without this people will find your business as any kind of hobby/personal website and won’t take you seriously. So, it’s a good to have stuff.

HTML Sitemap

HTML Sitemap is different from XML Sitemap. The purpose of HTML sitemap is to help visitors on the website to discover all your pages. Also, Google can also find this page and visit the links present there so it serves dual purpose. But, don’t consider it as a replacement for XML Sitemap. Also, don’t think that HTML sitemap page is so good for internal linking. You will understand about the internal linking later on in this blog. For now just understand that the main purpose of internal linking is to help search crawlers to understand how one page or content is linked to other. And, in HTML sitemap it contains all pages of the website so it do not provide any context to crawlers so that’s not going to add much value on internal linking. Though, it can lead to discovery of URLs.

CDN for SaaS Websites

Majority of SaaS websites are made for global use and meant to be visited from world wide audience. And, there’s when you need CDN. The main purpose of CDN is to host your website on different servers world wide so that whenever a user visits your website, the website content get fetched from the nearest server to the user which will lead to faster loading of the website.

Is CDN a ranking factor in SaaS SEO?

CDN is not a ranking factor in SaaS SEO but the loading speed of the website and the user-experience involved in it is surely a factor Google consider for ranking purpose. Website loading speed is very crucial because if your website is loading late then your visitors will quit your website. So, it is recommended to have CDN for your SaaS website so that people visiting from any part of the world can have a good user-experience when visiting your website.

Which are some of the good CDNs for SaaS website?

I have used Cloudflare mostly and in some client websites where WPEngine is the hosting provider, they provide their own CDN facility. You can find the list of good CDNs here.

Use of SGX (Signed Exchanges)

I can’t explain much technicality behind the working of SGX at this point but as per my research how it helps SEO is that it improves the page loading by serving the cached version rather than fetching the content from main server. This leads to improve in page loading speed and improves Core Web Vitals. Cloudflare has the SGX facility and you can find much information on their SGX page.

Link to home page logo

This is something which all developer do this day but in case they forget to do this you need to inform them to make the logo clickable and put the link of home page of your SaaS website. The purpose of this implementation is to help visitors navigate to your home page easily and as these days everyone is adding a link on their logo which takes to the home page, many people are habituated of this and they often click on the logo to visit the home page. So, if you are not adding the link on your logo then they will get confused. So, create a good user experience!

Google Analytics Setup

These days almost all website use Google Analytics for website visitors data tracking to understand which pages have got how many views and how much time they spend on it, and much for data. Analytics data helps in improving the user experience in a website by analyzing the data and users behavior.

It’s free to use and easy to set up and gives enough data for a normal website. You can definitely use Google Analytics for your SaaS website but there are advanced analytics softwares available that can be used for advanced data tracking. Some of them are Mix Panel and Kissmetrics.

Google Tag Manager Set Up

It is also a free product of Google which helps in centralizing all tags or tracking codes you want to add on the website in one place. You can put GTM tracking code on the website and through Google Tag Manager you can add whatever tracking code or verification code you want to enable on the website. This helps in managing too many tracking scripts in one place and additionally it avoids the situation of slow website loading due to the use of too many scripts on the source code.

MS Clarity/Hotjar Set Up

If you want to understand users behavior on your website and understand what they are clicking and what activity they are doing on your website then installing tools like MS Clarity or Hotjar will be very much helpful for you. It is highly important for SaaS websites to understand the users’ behavior and action on the website to make the experience better. These tools generate heatmaps and video recording of users’ actions on the website. MS Clarity is totally free. You can use that and set up with Bing Webmaster Tool. Hotjar has a freemium model.

Keywords Research and Topics Selection for SaaS SEO Checklist

Define Buyer’s Persona or Ideal Customer Profile(ICP)

It is very important for a SaaS company to understand its Buyer’s Persona or Ideal Customer Profile. Many SaaS companies do it before they initiate the development of the product/solution. With proper understanding of Ideal Customer Profile you can formulate the perfect SEO marketing strategy for your SaaS Business. When you have a proper Buyer’s Persona details then you know how to market your product/solution to these people. You can’t sell to all and that’s why you need to be highly specific while choosing your audience and so should be your SEO marketing or user acquisition goal. Let’s discuss in detail how as a SaaS SEO Consultant you can implement Buyer’s Persona in your SaaS SEO Marketing strategy.

What you need to define Buyer’s Persona for your SaaS business?
  • Demographic Details (Age, Gender, Location, Education)
  • Job Role(s) (Job Title, Company Size, Industry, Job Responsibilities)
  • Work Lifestyle (What they do in their day-to-day work life)
  • Pain Points (What problem/challenges they are facing?)
  • List down common objections of buyers

Categorization of Keywords into Money Keywords and Informative Keywords

Mainly in your SaaS SEO marketing you can divide keywords into two category- Money Keywords and Informative Keywords.

Money Keywords are those which are commercial and transactional in nature whose intent is to purchase something. For example, “best sports shoes” “red t-shirt for boys” these keywords shows that the user or searcher is researching about a particular item which he/she want to buy. These keywords are called money keywords or they are also categorized into commercial keywords and transactional keywords.

Commercial Keywords are those which indicates that the searcher is planning to buy or you can say he/she is in the planning stage but not actually going to buy immediately. For example, “best gaming laptops”

Transactional Keywords are those which shows searcher’s urgency to buy something immediately. For example, “buy pen drive online”.

Informative Keywords are those which shows searcher’s intent as looking for some kind of information and not to buy anything. For example, “how to clean shoes without water” is an informative keyword because a user is not going to buy anything.

There are also keywords which can be said as Navigational Keywords because people are trying to navigate to a particular website or particular website’s particular page. For example, “Facebook login” is a navigational keyword where a searcher is trying to visit the login page of Facebook.com.

So, you need to do a proper keywords research and categorize them into two main buckets – Informational and Money Keywords (you can add commercial and transactional in this). You can use navigational keywords as well but there is a strategy here which I’m going to share later in this blog. Stay tuned!

Use Of Money Keywords For SaaS SEO Content Marketing

Here we are going to understand some amazing ways to do SEO content marketing through the money keywords. And, guess what? Many people don’t know these. So, you are going to learn these amazing SaaS SEO Content Marketing secrets now!

1. {number} Top/Best {keyword} in {year}

You would have definitely encountered some blog titles like “10 best laptops in 1500 BC”. So, the reason behind such of topics is to provide a list of items related to your keyword which you want to rank. Basically, it will be a listicle blog providing a list of items along with proper information of each list items. Why this a good strategy is because many people want to know about different options available in the market for the item they are looking for so that they can know about each of them and compare and take decision to buy any of them. Google also rank higher for such listicle blogs in comparison to any blog or page that provides information about only one item.

This is why I recommend to create listicle articles with proper information for each items mentioned on the list.

But, Chinmay, what about the competitors we are going to list on our blog and if user visits their website and purchase from them?

Well, first thing is you will not dare to make these kind of blog and rank on the first page and help competitors for promotion if your product/solution is sub-standard and don’t stand anywhere among the top 10 list. So, it’s not for you. But, if your product/solution is better than many or all then you can proudly write this blog and keep yourself at the top highlighting your own product/solution better than others.

Here are some real-world examples:

SaaS Websites fighting for the keyword – CRM. You can Google “Best CRM Software”.

https://www.freshworks.com/crm/crm-software/

https://www.hubspot.com/comparisons/best-crm

You can look at their content and how they have mentioned about their competitors. And, these two are not any small companies at all.

Google Search Results for best crm software
2. {keyword}: The Ultimate Guide/The Definitive Guide/The Last Guide

You would have noticed blogs like “The Ultimate Guide to SaaS Marketing”. So, what’s the funda behind such guide blogs? It’s simple write a blog which contains which has almost all the information a searcher is looking for a particular search query. Just like the blog you are reading right now. Yeah, this a guide book which is containing almost all the information you need for your SaaS SEO and at this point of blog I have reached almost 5ooo words.

Why these guide blogs work? Because, they are highly comprehensive and contains almost all the details which covers many keywords. So, it is broad and deep. Google find these blogs as highly authoritative and that’s the main reason these guide blogs rank well. But if you are thing if you just write an Ultimate Guide blog that will rank then you are wrong. There’s a method to rank a particular guide blog and if you want to know that then Contact Me now!

3. {keyword} for {industry}

If you want to target a particular industry and want to market your SaaS product/solution to people who are specifically looking for a solution made for that industry then this technique of SaaS SEO Marketing will work great. For example you have a booking management software and you want to market it to hospitality industry then you can make a page on “Best Booking Management Software for Hospitality Industry” or if you want to go with listicle type then it will be much better(it depends) “Top 10 Booking Management Softwares for Hospitality Industry”.

4. {keyword} for {audience_type}

This type of blogs will help you to target your audience group. For example if you are targeting freelancers for your contract management software then you can write a blog/page on “Contract Management Software for Freelancers” or in listicle format “Top 10 Contract Management Softwares for Freelancers”

5. {keyword} for {use_case}

This is good for targeting use cases related topics. Just like “Best AI Tool For Graphic Designing”. In this way you can target a specific set of users who are looking for a specific use.

6. Publish eBook on Google Books/Amazon KDP

Why I am suggesting to publish eBooks for your keywords is because websites like Google Books and Amazon KDP ranks better in Search Results. So, even if your website is new and not ranking well chances are that the book you publish on these platforms will rank higher on search results.

7. Don’t underestimate YouTube Videos

YouTube videos rank well in many cases for some search queries and you can’t ignore this part. Even these days people are searching a lot on YouTube for almost everything even for those search queries which they can quickly get on Google. So, why leave the 2nd most used search engine.

Use Of Competitors Brand Name For SEO Content Marketing

This is something interesting that many people don’t know to do it in a perfect way but those who know it are already ruling their space! And your wait is over to understand how navigational keywords can be used for marketing. Here you will understand how to use navigational keywords or that include brand names to do the marketing.

You can learn more on this blog about how to step by step hijack competitors’ brand keywords.

1. {competitor_brand_name} Alternatives in {year}

You can write blogs/pages on alternative solutions/products for your competitors’ brand name. For example, if your competitor is HubSpot then you can write a blog or page on “Best HubSpot Alternatives in 2023”.

Google Search Results for HubSpot alternatives
See how some websites have written on “HubSpot Alternatives”
2. {competitor_brand_name} Vs. {2nd_competitor_brand_name} Vs. {3rd_competitor_brand_name}

You can never miss to write comparison blogs (versus blogs) because people who are looking for something to buy then they will try to compare one brand with others to understand which is better. So, there is where you get chance to get on the floor and do your marketing. This is highly valuable strategy and you shouldn’t ignore it at all.

3. {competitor_brand_name} Vs. {2nd_competitor_brand_name} Vs. {your_brand_name}

Just like in the above point you compared 3 competitors at a time, here you should just include your brand. The strategy here is that if people are comparing two of your competitor brands then you can include your brand in that comparison such that if someone search about comparison of your competitors then your brand name also come to the search results even if they haven’t searched about you. For example, A and B are your competitors and C is your brand. If people are searching for “A vs B” then you should make a blog on “A vs B vs C” so that when someone searches for “A vs B”, your page that includes competitors and your brand name will be visible to the searchers.

4. Is {competitor_brand_name} for free?

If any of your competitor is providing something for free then there will be some people who will surely search if the product/solution is actually free or there are any hidden charges. There is where you can do your marketing.
